Galileo III

As a knowing eye can see from the design, Galileo III was once a starship. When its model became outmoded, it was cheaper to put in orbit as an OE around a planet than to scrap its hulk for parts. The Galileo III served many purposes before being re-designed into a preparatory high school, one of which was as a sort of free-range laboratory for plant life. The equipment the previous scientists left behind, with a few over-grown rooms, have been integrated into the school environment. Because of the school's relatively low number of habitants--in comparison to the maximum capacity the Galileo III was outfitted for--some of the decks have been combined, taking away the often claustrophobic feeling of close ship walls and low ceilings.

The school year is 288 eight-base days long. Students alternate between sixteen days of class and four days off fourteen times, ending the school 'year' with an eight day holiday. The 'year' is split into two 140 day terms. To some this may seem excessive, but it is comparable to the archaic, but still used, nine 'months' on/three 'months' off schedule.

The Galileo School Program is organized to best support students in their choice of specialization, with out forcing them to decide on an area of study too soon.

First YearCore Classes, FoundationsBasic classes are taken, chosen to fill an any educational gaps and to build a strong structure of knowledge for later years--
Second YearCore Classes, FoundationsBasic classes, chosen to further examine choices of specialization, supplemented by a movement towards more advanced choices as the student improves--
Third YearInitial steps towards specializationAdvanced classes in one or more choices in specialization, any last core classes finishedStudents preform a simple independent study project in the specialization they are most interested in during one term
Fourth YearDedicated StudyAdvanced classes supporting specialization choiceA final project is preformed, lasting over two terms, the choice to continue and expand the previous year's project is allowed, though it can count against the final score, as there has been more time to prepare. Fresh data and experiments must result from final year's work

The Galileo III school has a program designed to aid students in finding their life study. Students preform basic independent study projects their third year, and are given a choice to continue that project for their final project during their fourth year.

Following the four-year program, Galileo III students face the same two basic choices any secondary school student does, gap year or straight to Post-secondary education? The Galileo school itself boasts that, "Traditionally, 100% of our students go on to further education at universities, 64% without a gap year."
